On November 30, the Report will officially become a Sunday publication. The main dispatch will contain quick takes, a quote of the week, rumor has it…, for your consideration…, select press announcements from the past week, a list of the upcoming week’s previews and openings, and excerpts of new full-length articles, published individually, including my famously brutal reviews. The main dispatch will be accessible for free, and the full-length articles will continue to be accessible with a paid subscription.

This new format will allow me to provide greater coverage, and to address the events of the week in real time. And though I have endeavored to pen, for each production I attend, a detailed review, I have discovered that I simply cannot, given the number of productions I am now attending and the amount of time I necessarily allow myself – several days – to craft such an intentionally rigorous assessment, principally due to the great responsibility I feel to the art form and to the individual shows. Plus, some of my other articles – opinions, satirical essays, fact checks – have been either delayed or abandoned as a result. Thus, while I will continue to pen a detailed review for most productions, this new format will allow me to provide quick takes for those productions that do not receive a detailed review, and my quick takes will nonetheless contain specific points, if not specific examples.

Relatedly, I feel it is important to note that my reviews reach beyond any one show, because the creative discussions contain therein are universal. The punch list provided in my detailed review of Damn Yankees, for instance, has implications for any number of other projects, while speaking specifically to the project at hand. My reviews should not be read in isolation.

Lastly, I want to wish you a happy Thanksgiving, and to express my thanks to you for reading the Report and for joining me in the crusade for artistic excellence, historical accuracy, and informed theatrical discourse. I want to express my thanks to the press agents who have given me tickets to their shows in and out of New York City. And I want to express my thanks to the artists and producers actively toiling on the musical stage.

See you on Sunday.

I am thankful on this Thanksgiving holiday for many things, and included is coming across your work, Ben. I applaud your decision to still report on a large number of productions (I’m always interested in them all!) even if in brief, while dedicating more energy to reviews and discussions of particularly meaningful shows and topics. Sounds like a smart way forward and I welcome it.
