Safety Not Guaranteed, a new musical based on the 2012 film, premiered last year as part of the Next Wave series at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and it will head to Signature Theatre outside Washington, DC this spring. The musical has a book by Nick Blaemire (Soon, Space Dogs) and lyrics and music by Guster’s Ryan Miller, and it has a new director in Oliver Butler, whose credits include the Broadway production of What the Constitution Means to Me, the New York Theatre Workshop and Royal Court Theatre productions of A Knock on the Roof, and the Encores! Off-Center production of tick, tick…Boom! Butler replaces Lee Sunday Evans, who helmed the Next Wave premiere.

Bill Sherman also joins the creative team for the upcoming run, serving as music supervisor and orchestrator. Sherman’s stage credits as music supervisor, arranger, and or orchestrator include & Juliet, In the Heights, and, most recently, the Paper Mill Playhouse production of Take the Lead. He produced, with The Roots, the original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton, and he is a founding member of Freestyle Love Supreme.

Safety Not Guaranteed follows three reporters investigating a man who has just placed a wanted ad looking for a companion for his trip back in time. A two-week workshop of the promising new piece will commence on September 29, with a private industry presentation to be held on October 10. The Signature Theatre production will begin performances on March 3.

Safety Not Guaranteed is being produced commercially by Paige Price Productions, Big Beach Live Theatrical, Optimistic Pictures, Wagner Johnson Productions, BBT Productions, and Lucas Katler Productions.
